Epic of Gilgamesh: Origin, Subject and Function
This essay explores The Epic of Gilgamesh by fielding what Robert A. Segal, in his Theorizing About Myth, calls the “three major questions [that] can be asked of myth: what is its subject matter, what is its origin, and what is its function?” In an effort to render a holistic interpretation of Gilgamesh, the essay employs and critiques a variety of methodological approaches.
